Introduction
The American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) held its 62nd Annual Meeting from May 18th to May 22nd, 2024, in the vibrant city of Las Vegas, NV. Attendees, both in-person and virtually, had the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research, practice innovations, and technological advancements through educational sessions, sub-specialty society symposia, study groups, scientific presentations, education exhibits, and social events.
Not to be outdone, the 63rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Neuroradiology is coming up soon – set to take place from May 17-21, 2025 – in the heart of the historic city center of Philadelphia, PA, the “City of Brotherly Love” (a nickname coined by the city’s founder, William Penn, who envisioned a city of religious tolerance, free from persecution) (Fig 1). As highlighted in the message from ASNR 2025 Program Chair and President-Elect, Yoshimi Anzai, MD MPH, the “theme for the 2025 Annual Meeting is “Neuroimaging: Shaping the Future Together” … ASNR 2025 will illuminate the remarkable strides in our field, from the groundbreaking research breakthroughs to pioneering educational innovations & advancing clinical practice; ASNR 2025 is poised to redefine the landscape of neuroradiology.”.
In addition to the top-notch invited lectures, cutting-edge oral and electronic research presentations, and exhibits, the meeting will also feature ASNR/Industry Collaborative Sessions, daily breakfast “Clinical Updates”, and innovative “Rapid Fire” Case reviews of brain, spine, head & neck, pediatric, and vascular-interventional neuro-imaging, as well as what is certain to be a highly entertaining and educational 2025 ASNR Neuroradiology Game Show, scheduled just prior to the opening reception on Sunday night. Indeed, a highlight of the yearly meeting is the camaraderie of connecting and networking with old friends and new, both throughout the week and at the many social activities to which ASNR attendees are accustomed, including – but not limited to! – the spectacular Opening Reception, an elegant President’s Gala at the Wanamaker Building Crystal Tea Ballroom (with entertainment, networking, and afterparty), and a Community Party at the Reading Terminal Market.
The purpose of this article is to provide a lighthearted, overview of just a few of the highlights of ASNR 2024 – reflecting the clinical interests and subjective biases of our small group of authors – as well as a “sneak peek” of what to look forward to in Philadelphia at ASNR 2025 from May 17-21, just around the corner!
ASNR 2025 Philadelphia: Sneak Peek
With the ASNR 63rd Annual Meeting 2025 just around the corner, we are excited to offer this “sneak peek” of some of the sessions and activities we look forward to in Philadelphia.
The week will kick off with the Saturday/Sunday pre-meeting symposium, which will feature several cutting-edge topics that will delve into the theme of “Embracing Humanity Through Neuroimaging,” exploring how – to quote Dr. Anzai – “we will navigate the ever-evolving frontiers of our discipline to deliver unparalleled care to our patients with compassion and kindness.” Symposium topics include sessions on: (i) music & the brain, (ii) the future of AI, (iii) photon counting CT, (iv) “Automation & Emotion in Health & Healthcare” (the 2025 J. Arliss Pollock Memorial Lecture), (v) brain computer interfaces, and (vi) Alzheimer’s/ARIA/Dementia, to name just a few. The symposium portion of the meeting will conclude with the 2025 ASNR Neuroradiology Game Show, followed by the Opening Reception, open to all attendees and exhibitors.
Throughout the week, from Monday to Wednesday, ASNR will again offer stimulating, high impact sub-specialty programming, with timely, clinically important content from the ASFNR, ASHNR, ASPNR, ASSR, and the SNIS. Attendees can plan on engaging in stimulating content from our:
- diverse committees (including health policy, imaging informatics & innovation, young professionals, and education)
- joint sessions with the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER) and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI)
- numerous study groups (including Alzheimer’s/ARIA/Dementia, MR Guided Focused Ultrasound, PET-Guided Diagnosis and Management in Neuro-Oncology, Vessel Wall Imaging, Functional and Diffusion MRI, and Gene & Cell Therapy)
- breakout sessions with our several industry partners.
Finally, all sessions will be recorded and can be viewed on-demand once available on June 5, 2025. Up to 78.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits™ will be available from the on-demand content, viewable at your own pace and as time permits!
ASNR 2024 Las Vegas: Highlights
The 2024 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Neuroradiology, which highlighted clinical and technical neuroimaging updates and innovations, was fun, highly educational, and a huge success. Indeed, the knowledge gained – and the friendships, networking, and research collaborations that happened in Vegas – clearly did not stay in Vegas (Fig 2)!
The theme of the ASNR weekend Symposium preceding the Annual Meeting was “The New Frontier”, featuring several cutting-edge developments that may become tomorrow’s routine. Especially noteworthy topics included practical discussions of AI implementation (“We’re All In”), genetic therapies (i.e., emerging novel treatments with varied delivery routes, such as cisterna magna puncture), health policy committee programming (i.e., “New Frontiers in Work Models”, including remote interpretation, staffing shortages, and the RUC), and an international session on brain tumors and focused US (Fig 3).
Attendees fully enjoyed the diverse attractions that Las Vegas has to offer. Group social activities also included a vibrant and animated “neuro-networking” party at the Caesars Palace Hotel Temple Pool (Fig 4) and the President’s Appreciation Gala (Fig 5).
As noted by Program Chair Dr. Wintermark, ASNR 2024 provided participants with dedicated how-to sessions, including “clinical vignettes discussed by a number of experts, case sessions with audience response, power pitches, and a shark tank session with partners.” There was enthusiastic engagement by the ASFNR, ASHNR, ASPNR, ASSR, and SNIS subspecialty societies, as well as from the several different committees and study groups.
Conclusion
In summary, ASNR 2024 attendees learned about the latest clinical innovations, technological advancements, and cutting-edge research. Perhaps just as important, the meeting also provided ample opportunities for reconnecting with old friends and fostering new social bonds, within the backdrop of the exciting and lively city of Las Vegas. We know that the ASNR’s brightest days are ahead, and look forward to “Shaping the Future Together” with you soon at ASNR 2025 in Philadelphia!
