How the ASNR Works for You
From ASNR President Dr. Yoshimi Anzai
ASNR works for you by providing critically important neuroradiology education and mentoring in the places most needed around the world, particularly in developing countries with extremely limited resources.
Each year, ASNR sponsors up to 10 Senior Members to teach and mentor neuroradiologists in developing countries. Since its inception in 2017, the Anne G. Osborn International Outreach Professor Program has sent more than 50 members around the globe– from South America to Africa to Asia.
The stories of the professors are inspiring and a powerful reminder to all of us of the ASNR mission: ASNR is dedicated to maximizing the benefits of neuroradiology to patients and other providers by promoting the highest standards for training and practice.
Dr. Suyash Mohan, Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania, recently returned from Recife, Brazil, as part of the Osborn Program. He described his extensive teaching and collaboration with local medical institutions during his stay in Recife. The city’s health complex includes over 400 health establishments (private and public) and more than 8,000 hospital beds. His teaching focused on neuro-oncology, response assessment, and new imaging techniques. During his week abroad, Dr. Mohan delivered over 12 didactic lectures and conducted multiple case review sessions with medical students, radiology residents, faculty, and technologists.
Dr. Mohan also visited several major institutions to enhance local training and education. He visited Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) and delivered three lectures on neuro-oncologic imaging; he conducted lectures at Hospital da Restauração focusing on differential diagnosis and neurologic emergencies; and he engaged with IMIP, a major teaching hospital, delivering three lectures and optimizing neuroimaging protocols.
Dr. Mohan also participated in a significant national radiology conference, sharing insights with a larger audience. He attended the Jornada Pernambucana de Radiologia with over 1,200 participants. While at the conference, he delivered four lectures on key topics in neuroimaging and tumor board presentations. He also focused on networking and relationship-building within the radiology community.
Dr. Mohan believes his Professorship has laid the groundwork for ongoing collaborations with his hosts, including follow-up webinars and a structured mentorship exchange.
Dr. Mohan’s experience reflects the sentiments shared by many other Osborn Professors…profound gratitude for the opportunity and deep appreciation for the global efforts to strengthen neuroradiology.
We thank Dr. Mohan– and all Osborn Professors past and future – for their dedication. To read more of their stories, please visit: https://www.asnr.org/international-collaboration/anne-g-osborn-asnr-international-outreach-professor-program/feedback-from-outreach-participants/
The Anne G. Osborn International Outreach Professorship Program is organized and managed by the ASNR International Collaborations Committee. We thank Dr. Anne G. Osborn for her generous donation, as well as the many donors who contribute to this vital fund annually.
