2025 Gold Medal, Honorary Member, Outstanding Contributions in Neuroradiology Education, and Outstanding Contributions in Research Award Recipients
The 2025 ASNR Awards Committee, chaired by Yvonne Lui, MD, FACR, has selected the following as recipients of the ASNR 2025 Annual Awards.
ASNR Awards David M. Yousem, MD, MBA, with the 2025 Gold Medal
Dr. Yousem received his B.S. and M.D. degrees at the University of Michigan and received his M.B.A. at Johns Hopkins University in 2003. He completed a radiology residency at Johns Hopkins and a two-year fellowship in neuroradiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He spent 8 years on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, rising to the rank of full professor before moving in 1998 to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as its Division Chief of Neuroradiology. He served in that role for 20 years, as well as stints as the Vice Chairman of Faculty Development and the Associate Dean of Professional Development.
Dr. Yousem has published over 350 peer reviewed scientific articles, over 50 educational publications in journals, several chapters in books and has lectured on five continents. He was Dr. Robert I. Grossman’s co-author of the original “Neuroradiology: The Requisites” textbook in 1994 and has participated in all 5 of its subsequent editions, the most recent published in 2024 with first authors Rohini Nadgir and Doris Lin. Overall sales of “Neuroradiology: The Requisites” have exceeded 100,000 copies. Dr. Yousem has also authored other books including “Radiology Business Practice: How to Succeed” with Norman J. Beauchamp, Jr and the Head and Neck, Neuroimaging, and Non-interpretive Skills Case Series editions. He is currently the Senior Consultant for Medality/MRIOnline.com and provides educational content for their Neuroradiology series. Through this forum he has gain wide international acclaim for his lectures. In 2018, he was awarded an RSNA Educator Award for his career accomplishments in teaching.
When asked about his most significant contributions to the field of neuroradiology, Dr. Yousem commented on the hundreds of neuroradiology fellows that have graduated from the Johns Hopkins fellowship program, the Requisites book, the continuous productivity in scientific contributions over the years credited to numerous neuroradiology research fellows from across the globe (see Figure 1, PUBMED graph below), the establishment of the neuroradiology fellowship match under his guidance in 2001, the 47 articles written (many with Laurie Loevner) in the 1990s establishing the value of MRI in assessing head and neck cancers, the many friendships he has made through the neuroradiology profession, and hundreds of green card application letters he has written to help international physicians become permanent citizens. He has established through donations to the ASNR Foundation the Research Fellow Award, which provides financial support for full time research fellows to attend the annual ASNR meeting.
Dr. Yousem served as Committee Chairs and an Officer within the ASNR from 2002-2008 before being elected the President of the American Society of Neuroradiology in 2008-2009. He also served as the Secretary / Treasurer of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies from 2011 to 2015. He sits on many of national radiological societies committees.
Dr. Yousem, under Bob Grossman’s encouragement, has completed numerous 10K runs, three marathons (best time: 3 hours, 54 minutes), a half Ironman, and a full Ironman (2.5-mile swim followed by 112-mile bike ride.)
ASNR Awards Sonia Bermúdez-Muñoz, MD, with the 2025 Honorary Member Award
Sonia Bermúdez-Muñoz is a Colombian Neuroradiologist with profound experience in education and journal publication coupled with expert knowledge of the scientific and healthcare areas and their management with honed enthusiasm for scientific research.
She is a Medical Doctor (M.D.) at Medicine Javeriana Pontifical University (1983) with a Specialization Diploma in Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging from Nueva Granada Military Hospital (1987). Her orientation to neuroradiology was inspired by Professor Carlos Gonzalez at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia in 1990. After working in radiology and neuroradiology for several years, she obtained the European Diploma of Neuroradiology (EDINR) Advanced Diploma in 2013. Also, she has other diplomas: Service Management Diplomacy at the National University of Colombia, an Advanced Diploma as GPS Consulting Six Sigma Green Belt, and an Advanced Diploma in High Management in Health from Jorge Tadeo Lozano University.
She is a Titular Professor of the Diagnostic Imaging Specialization Program at El Bosque University and Titular Professor at the University of Rosario in postgraduate studies in emergency medicine. For the last 26 years, she has been a neuroradiologist at the University Hospital of the Santa Fe Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia, where she has been the Chief of the Diagnostic Imaging Department and the chief of the neuroradiology section. He also taught in the radiology programs at the Nueva Granada Military University and the Javeriana University, where she reached the rank of associate professor.
Her main areas of interest are adult diagnostic neuroradiology: Stroke, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, spine degenerative and infectious diseases and advanced images as fMRI, spine intervention, mainly facet epidural foraminal injection for pain treatment percutaneous intervention for spine synovial cyst, and biopsies. She is one of the leaders in the Stroke Centre of the University Hospital one of the Joint commission certified stroke centers. Also, these are the main issues of her national and international papers. She has also participated as an author in book chapters on radiology, internal medicine, neurology, neuroanesthesia, and neuroimaging clinics of North America.
During her career, she has been involved in educating about a hundred radiology residents in Nueva Granada Military, Javeriana, and El Bosque Universities. Also, she has been the radiology professor of neurology, neurosurgery, neuropediatric, emergency medicine, and orthopedic residents.
She has been a speaker at national and international conferences and congresses for radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, otorhinolaryngologists, endocrinologists, and emergency physicians, including the congresses of the European Course of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology in Latin America SILAN ASSR and ASNR, and is a professor at the Inter-American College of Radiology.
Sonia was one of the creators of the Colombian magazine of Radiology 35 years ago, and in the first years, she was the redaction chief. During the last 30 years, she has been the director in-chief of this magazine. This is a four numbers by year publication, and the papers are published in Spanish and English. She has also been the coordinator of the CIR (Interamerican College of radiology) Virtual Magazine of Radiology for the last 10 years.
She is also an academic peer of the Argentine Radiology Journal and the Chilean Radiology Journal. She belongs to the Scientific Committee Member for Colombian National Association and its Congress and has been a member of other scientific committees Interamerican Radiology Congress (CIR)XXVIII National Congress SERAM SILAN Congress.
For her academic achievements, she has received awards such as Diploma of Academic Merit for her relevant academic actions in the field of education, research, and dissemination of radiological sciences. Inter-American College of Radiology 2022, Honorary Member Colombian Association of Radiology, Prize “A una obra”, Colombian Association of radiology 2011 Professor Interamerican College of Radiology 2011 and The award for academic excellence from the University Hospital of the Santa Fe Foundation in Bogotá (2011).
She is currently the president of the medical welfare committee of the Santa Fe de Bogota Foundation. In this committee, she led the Program of calls to relatives of COVID patients in support of the hospital’s intensive care and emergency physicians and periodically gives a lecture to incoming doctors about “preparing for retirement.”
ASNR Awards Apostolos John Tsiouris, MD, with the 2025 Outstanding Contributions in Neuroradiology Education Award
Dr. Apostolos John Tsiouris, M.D., is the Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology and a Professor of Clinical Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is a dedicated mentor, educator, and internationally renowned speaker. Dr. Tsiouris reaches broad audiences through invitations from the ASNR, ENRS, ASFNR, RSNA, and the Salzburg Medical Seminars. He lectures on a wide range of topics, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral and spinal vascular malformations, CNS infections, and intracranial vessel wall imaging.
Dr. Tsiouris is recognized for his educational accomplishments, having received a Magna Cum Laude Educational Exhibit Award from the RSNA and the Robin C. Watson Radiology Teacher of the Year Award at New York-Presbyterian – Weill Cornell. As a testament to his contributions to neuroradiology education, he was the inaugural recipient and namesake of the A. John Tsiouris Award for Excellence in Neuroradiology Fellowship Teaching at Weill Cornell. As an educator, he has impacted not only radiologists but also professionals across disciplines, earning prestigious teaching awards from both the Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology departments at his institution. He is an active member of the ASNR, RSNA, Eastern Neuroradiological Society (ENRS), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), Association of University Radiologists (AUR), American College of Radiology (ACR), New York Roentgen Society (NYRS), and the American Medical Association (AMA), and he contributes to the American Board of Radiology.
Dr. Tsiouris’ research interests over the years have included cerebrovascular disease, traumatic brain injury, and quantitative susceptibility mapping in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He has edited a case-based review textbook on brain imaging, authored numerous chapters, and published over 120 peer-reviewed papers that reflect his commitment to sharing and advancing neuroradiology knowledge within the community.
Dr. Tsiouris attended The Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He then received his M.D. from Weill Medical College of Cornell University, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology training at the New York-Presbyterian–Weill Cornell Campus and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospitals.
ASNR Awards Daniel Reich, MD, PhD, with the 2025 Outstanding Contributions in Research Award
Dr. Daniel Reich, Senior Investigator at NIH/NINDS, leads clinical studies on multiple sclerosis and is an attending neuroradiologist at the NIH Clinical Center. He is also Adjunct Professor of Radiology, Neurology, and Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins and of Neurology at Yale. He earned his undergraduate degree in math and physics from Yale, a PhD in neurophysiology from The Rockefeller University, and an MD from Cornell.
Dr. Reich founded the North American Imaging in Multiple Sclerosis (NAIMS) Cooperative and serves as federal liaison to several multiple sclerosis-related boards and committees. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and he has received prestigious awards for his research, including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Barancik Award for Innovation in Multiple Sclerosis Research and the NIH Graduate Partnership Programs Outstanding Mentor Award.
His NIH lab focuses on advanced MRI techniques for multiple sclerosis, conducting interventional clinical trials and exploring noninvasive imaging modalities to understand tissue damage mechanisms. In 2017, Dr. Reich’s lab discovered that human and nonhuman primates have a lymphatic system in the membranes covering the brain and showed how that system can be imaged noninvasively with MRI.
Dr. Reich has published over 300 papers, given more than 150 invited lectures globally, and supervised numerous scientists and clinicians in training.
