ASNR Member Spotlight: Dr. Rajiv Mangla

Rajiv Mangla, MD, is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Neurology, Division of Neuroradiology, at SUNY Upstate Medical University, The Alan, and Marlene Norton College of Medicine in Syracuse NY.

Dr. Mangla was nominated by Dr. Muhammad Atif Naveed for feature in the Member Spotlight for “…being an excellent radiologist, great teacher, and a research scholar. A complete Neuroradiology Nerd.”

How did you become interested in neuroradiology?
My journey into neuroradiology started during my radiology residency, where I was captivated by the complexities of the central nervous system. The physics of MRI, with its broad application, particularly intrigued me, offering a unique window into exploring neurological conditions. These methods provided profound insights into CNS pathology, blending intellectual challenge with clinical significance. The integration of high-tech solutions in patient care cemented my decision to specialize in neuroradiology.

Why did you join ASNR?
In my view, joining the ASNR is an essential step for any neuroradiologist. This organization stands out for its commitment to education, research, and innovation. Most importantly, it helps in providing the tools and knowledge necessary to excel in clinical practice of neuroradiology. ASNR’s dedication to fostering professional development through conferences, educational programs, and research initiatives has been crucial. It offers invaluable opportunities to stay informed, network, and contribute to the field. Being part of this dynamic community has kept me well-informed and has significantly shaped my career. I am proud to be part of its mission.

How have your life experiences shaped your approach to your career?
My life experiences have deeply influenced my professional path in neuroradiology. Having trained in both India and the United States, I’ve gained a broad perspective, allowing me to navigate diverse healthcare environments effectively.

My role as a researcher in advanced neuroimaging has fostered an approach that merges academic exploration with clinical application. This blend has invigorated my commitment to patient care and the advancement of neuroradiology, giving me a profound sense of purpose.

What inspires you?
I am continually inspired by the enthusiasm and curiosity of radiology residents and neuroradiology fellows. Their questions and insights challenge me to evolve as both an educator and clinician. As Buddha noted, “If you light a lamp for someone else, it will also brighten your own path,” guiding my dedication to mentorship and learning.

My mentors and colleagues have also been pivotal in my career development. Their wisdom and support have been invaluable. Furthermore, the swift progress in neuroradiology technology keeps me motivated, alongside the steadfast support of my family.

Anything else you would like to share?
I am deeply honored by Dr. Naveed’s kind words and nomination. As an educator, my goal is to foster an engaging learning environment that promotes curiosity and critical thinking. By incorporating clinical cases, advanced imaging, and research into my teaching, I actively involve trainees, challenging them to refine the broad differential diagnoses seen on imaging to a singular, most likely diagnosis within a specific clinical context. My aim is to enrich the educational journey for young professionals, hoping to propel the field of neuroradiology forward through their achievements.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to be featured in the ASNR Member Spotlight.
