ASNR Awards Dr. Anton N. Hasso with Gold Medal...

The Gold Medal Award Committee, chaired by Dr. James M. Provenzale, has selected Dr. Anton N. Hasso from the University of California Irvine Medical Center, as the 2010 Gold Medal Award recipient.

Dr. Hasso has served in major leadership positions in the Society, including as President from 1990-1991.  That was an extremely important time in the history of the Society, particularly in the political activity leading up to the establishment of the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology.  From 1999 until 2005, he was a member of the Residency Review Committee for Diagnostic Radiology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.  He has contributed substantially to the academic fabric of neuroradiology as an investigator, lecturer, mentor, reviewer, editor, philanthropist, and advocate of the highest ideals of Radiology. Not only has Dr. Hasso dedicated service to the ASNR, but he has carried the banner of neuroradiology throughout many societies that make up organized medicine.

ASNR Awards Honorary Membership to Dr. E. Turgut Tali

The Honorary Membership Committee, chaired by Dr. Norman Leeds, has selected Dr. E. Turgut Tali for Honorary Membership in 2010. 

Dr. Tali is currently Professor of Radiology, Executive Associate Dean, and Director of Neuroradiology at the Department of Radiology at the Gazi University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey.  He is co-Editor-in-Chief of Neuroradiology, and has been a guest editor for several issues of Neuroimaging Clinics of North America and Revista de Neuroradiologia.  Dr. Tali is a valued reviewer for AJNR, and regularly attends ASNR Annual Meetings.  He has served as President in two ESNR congresses, and will be President of the Symposium Neuroradiologicum in 2014. 

NER Foundation Awards Dr. Victor M. Haughton for Outstanding Contributions in Research…

This award was established in 2004 to recognize neuroradiologists who have demonstrated consistent excellence and lifelong accomplishment in basic or clinical neuroscience research, particularly funded research from the NIH, NSF, March of Dimes, etc. Dr. R. Gilberto Gonzalez chaired the NER Foundation committee responsible for selecting a recipient for this award.   Dr. Victor M. Haughton from the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics is the 2010 award recipient.  Dr. Haughton’s numerous research endeavors in the field of Neuroradiology for more than three decades makes him worthy of the award.  He has received many research grants, primarily for the study of contrast agents.  His creativity is also recognized by the nine patents that have been awarded to Dr. Haughton and his collaborators.

Presentation of the above awards (Gold Medal, Honorary Membership, and NER Foundation Outstanding Contributions in Research) will take place during the 48th Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, May 15-20, 2010.

ASNR, NER Foundation and ISMRM Announce Seed Grant

Overview

The ASNR and NER Foundation announce a new seed grant partnership with the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 2010.

The grant topic is:
 

  • MR Biomarkers for Disease Assessment of Neurological or Head & Neck Disorders (funded jointly by ISMRM and ASNR)

Eligibility:

The seed grant competition is only open to clinical and basic scientists at or just beyond the postgraduate, fellow and junior faculty levels working in MR research in academia, industry, or research institutions.  Typical applicants are expected to have not more than the equivalent of five years’ postdoctoral (e.g., Ph.D. or comparable) or three years of post-residency (e.g., M.D. or comparable) research, as documented by a curriculum vitae.  The applicant would be expected to be in a position to do independent research and a letter of confirming this will be required from the applicant's supervisor, mentor, or department head.

Review Criteria:

  • Topic:   MR Biomarkers for Disease Assessment
  • M.D. and Ph.D. collaborative projects required
  • In addition, applicants must be ASNR and/or ISMRM members. For the jointly sponsored grant, one PI must be an ISMRM member and one PI must be an ASNR member.

To be considered for a seed grant, the applicants must provide:

  • A cover letter from the applicants, noting their Society membership number;
  • Names of investigators  (The role of each investigator must be clearly articulated and percentage contribution of each clearly described)
  • Institution
  • Description of the Research (Five-page maximum: One-half (½) page aims, one-half (½) page  dedicated to the significance of the expected results, one (1) page preliminary work, and three (3) page research methods);
  • Timeline (include a description of the research milestones you intend to achieve and when: One-half (1/2) page maximum.  This can be graphical or text.
  • Budget- as detailed as possible.  Salary support for the Principal Investigators is allowed.  Please provide a justification for each budgeted item.  Support for undergraduate or undergraduate students, post-docs, residents and fellows is allowed.
  • Description of applicants’ current employment positions and how these grant funds and resources will be used to leverage future grants, provide early impact on academic career, (and describe any internal or external sources of funding for this research, either existing, applied for, and/or plans to apply): One (1) page maximum.
  • Describe any conflicts of interest

The successful applicant will be announced at the Joint Annual Meeting ISMRM-ESMRMB in Stockholm, Sweden, (May 1-7, 2010).  At the completion of work, the investigators will be asked to present the results of this work at the ISMRM 19th Scientific Meeting & Exhibition in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, May 7-13, 2011, and submit a manuscript for consideration for publication in one of the two ISMRM journals.
