ASNR Prez Release: That’s a Wrap! Summing Up the ASNR Annual Meeting

Post meeting greetings to all! During my year as ASNR president, I hope to provide our members with a monthly “Prez Release” and would welcome your ideas/input in return!

The 2017 Foundation of the ASNR Symposium and Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA featured warmth and brightness, in every sense of those words. I am awaiting “official” evaluation summaries and number crunching, but overall, it was a great success! Highlights included an address by our (no longer “new”) Executive Director, Mary Beth Hepp, and keynote speaker, Dr. James Madara, EVP and CEO of the American Medical Association. Extremely popular was the special session, “Meet the Pres” in which former ASNR presidents offered accounts of things they had taught and/or written that are no longer true, and procedures they have performed that they no longer do. Immediate feedback was positive, and the shared insights greatly appreciated. Participants included Gordon Sze as moderator, and participants Jim Barkovich, Nick Bryan, Tony Hasso, Carolyn Meltzer, Bob Quencer, Eric Russell, and Bob Zimmerman. The “reactor panel”, Steve Kieffer, Norm Leeds, Pam Schaefer, and Pat Turski gave commentary between presentations. Great thanks to all!

Another featured session, “Neuroradiology, Dusk to Dawn,” addressed overnight coverage for diagnostic neuroradiology in various practice settings. Here, I must acknowledge Erin Simon Schwartz for her skillful moderating of the session, which included input from trainees Sana Ali, Eric Greif and Susan Sotardi; pediatric neuroradiologist David Mirsky; and faculty from various practice settings, Char Branstetter, Jean-Paul Dym, Jimmy Lee and Greg Nicola. As the “closing act” for the Symposium on Sunday evening, this session was well received, followed by a lively “beach band” reception.

Great congratulations to our 2017 Gold Medalist, Robert D. Zimmerman, and Outstanding Contributions in Research Award winner, Jerry Jarvik.

It was a pleasure to see many of you in Long Beach, and I am proud to serve our Society as ASNR President in the year ahead! Please find my contact information below, should you wish to reach out to me.
