The American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) stood alongside 14 other medical societies dedicated to neurologic care in being signatory to new training guidelines for endovascular intervention of ischemic stroke patients caused by emergent large vessel occlusion in the brain. The guidelines were developed by an international, multidisciplinary group of experts in neurologic disease including representatives of the ASNR and will be published in seven journals, including the American Journal of Neuroradiology.
To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive effort to explore the training requirements for specialist physicians to safely and effectively perform mechanical embolectomy. The neuro-based societies including the ASNR considered the time right given the recent RCTs that have established mechanical embolectomy for strokes caused by large vessel occlusion as Level 1A evidence for treatment of stroke.
Dr. Laurie Loevner, president of the American Society of Neuroradiology notes that …“the ASNR has a long history of serving stroke patients. Participating in the creation of this document fulfills our societal mission of advancing neuroradiologic care.”
