ASNR CPC CODING & REIMBURSEMENT SUBCOMMITTEE OVERVIEW

The ASNR Clinical Practice Committee (CPC) Coding & Reimbursement Subcommittee, led by William D. Donovan, MD, MPH, FACR, represents ASNR membership on issues related to coding and reimbursement at both AMA RUC and CPT meetings which provides a forum for the ASNR to address coding, reimbursement and coverage concerns.

The AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) is a multispecialty society responsible for making annual recommendations for new and revised physician services to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). ASNR sends both physician and staff representation to the AMA RUC meetings, which are three times per year. ASNR CPC is very active on the RUC. Joshua A. Hirsch, MD, FACR, FSIR has become the new ASNR RUC Advisor, taking over for Dr. Donovan. Gregory N. Nicola, MD has become the new ASNR Alternate RUC Advisor. For further insight about the RUC, you may refer to Dr. Donovan’s AJNR Health Care Vignette, “What Is The RUC?” which can be accessed at http://www.ajnr.org/cgi/reprint/ajnr.A2767v1 (AJNR log-in required).

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is the most widely accepted medical nomenclature used to report medical procedures and services under public and private health insurance programs. The AMA CPT Editorial Panel is responsible for maintaining the CPT nomenclature by revising, modifying or updating the CPT codes, descriptors, rules and guidelines. Jacqueline A. Bello, MD, FACR continues in her role as the ASNR CPT Advisor.

The Coding & Reimbursement subcommittee roster is available at the following link: Coding & Reimbursement Roster

The ASNR benefits tremendously from our involvement at the RUC and CPT, based on the efforts and expertise of our volunteers and staff. ASNR’s continued participation at the RUC and CPT depends on its membership in the AMA House of Delegates. Please consider joining the AMA so that ASNR can retain its seat in the AMA House of Delegates. The AMA membership page can be found at the following link: AMA Membership Page.
