Membership Information


The American Society of Spine Radiology (ASSR) was founded in 1993 during the 31st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Jeffrey S. Ross, from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation was its first president (1993-1996). The Society currently has over 500 active members.

Objectives:

The objectives and purposes of the Society shall be consonant with those of the ASNR, but shall emphasize spine imaging concerns, including specifically:

To develop, foster and support the care of patients undergoing spine imaging related procedures.

To develop, foster and support high standards of practice, research, and education in spine imaging throughout America.

To stimulate the development of spine imaging, both as a distinct entity, and as a significant constituent part of neuroradiology.

To promote a close fellowship and exchange of ideas amongst neuroradiologists, radiologists, physicians, surgeons, and scientists interested in the spine.

To promote close cooperation between the Society and other appropriate societies or associations in radiology, neuroradiology, and related sciences.

To advance spine imaging by sponsoring, encouraging, and electing neuroradiologists interested in spine imaging to prominent positions in the ASNR and in kindred scientific organizations.


To provide meetings for the dissemination of knowledge by presentation of scientific papers, lectures, discussions, fora, etc., either as part of the Annual Scientific Meeting of the ASNR, and/or independent of that meeting, but with the support of the ASNR.

Membership Classification Descriptions

Active Members ... shall be radiologists who practice or have a special interest in spine imaging, regardless of geographical site of practice or residence. Active members shall fulfill the following requirements:

A. Shall be a radiologist certified by the American Board of Radiology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Osteopathic College of Radiology, or other board or Tribunal which, in the judgment of the Executive Committee, is of equivalent rank.

B. Shall be judged worthy of inclusion in the Society by the Membership Committee of the Society, on the basis of documented interest in and/or contribution to spine radiology.


Associate Members ... shall be other physicians, surgeons, or academic scientists, with an acknowledged interest in, or who have made outstanding contributions to spine imaging or imaging related procedures.

Honorary Members ... shall be individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to spine imaging, whether or not they meet criteria for other categories of membership. Nominations for Honorary membership may be submitted by any category of members of the Society, directly to the Executive Committee. Those individuals found worthy by majority vote of the Executive Committee shall be proposed to the members of the Society for possible election at the succeeding Annual Business Meeting.

Rights of Membership

All members in good standing shall have the right to participate in the scientific and business meetings and activities of the Society.

Only Active members in good standing have the right to serve on standing committees, to propose candidates for nomination, to vote and to hold elective office in the Society. Because of the special nature of the Society as a section of the ASNR, only those members of the Society who are simultaneously members of the ASNR may be appointed to represent the ASSR on the ASNR Executive Committee.

Application and Sponsorship

Everyone applying for Active membership must pay the $25 application fee.

All candidates must return a completed application. ASNR members do not need to provide any sponsors or documentation; however, all other candidates must provide the following:

NOTE: All candidates for Active membership must include a $25.00 application fee, regardless of whether or not they are ASNR members.


All applications for membership must be submitted by the deadline to the ASSR Membership Committee via the Headquarters Office. Those candidates judged worthy by the Membership Committee, subject to review by the Executive Committee, shall be presented to the membership for possible election by the members of the Society at the succeeding Annual Business Meeting. A majority vote of the members attending and voting at the Annual Business Meeting is necessary for election of a candidate in any category. Notification of election to the membership shall be sent four to six weeks following the Annual Meeting, and dues will be assessed following election, so please do not include membership dues with your application.
