Are you planning to attend the ASNR Meeting this year?
Here are the Top 7 things you should know before you decide!!

The ASNR Annual Meeting will be held May 31- June 5, 2008 at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. We are excited to visit the amazing restorations and renovations that have occurred to rejuvenate this historic city. Neuroradiology Fellows can attend at a reduced rate, but some complain that the breadth of the meeting is a little daunting at first! Here are a few important tips to help you get the most out of the ASNR 46th Annual Meeting.

  1. The ASNR is always preceded by a weekend NER Foundation Symposium. This year's topic is Emergency Neuroradiology: a day and a half of lectures including evaluation of head trauma, unstable spine injuries and head & neck emergencies. Also included is using multimodal CT and MR for acute stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with sessions on post-processing of CTA, CTP and MRP. All you need to know to keep up with advanced imaging techniques.
  2. The ASNR formally commences on Monday morning. There are multiple subspecialties within the ASNR and these are presented over several days. For example: General Neuroradiology sessions are held all week from Monday through Thursday, Pediatrics and Head & Neck are held on the Monday and Tuesday, Functional imaging topics are presented on Tuesday + Wednesday, Interventional Neuroradiology and Spine imaging on Wednesday + Thursday. These focus areas are color-coded in the program book to provide an easy and quick reference.
  3. Choose a topic of interest (such as Head & Neck), then follow the didactic lectures, paper presentation sessions and posters. It is often better to aim for the whole of one area than small portions of everything.
  4. Note high-yield learning areas:
    1. Case-based review sessions
    2. Self Assessment Modules (SAMs) & Maintenance of Certification (MOC) review sessions - These review sessions are part of the maintenance of certification required by the ABR for practicing radiologists and are also especially helpful for preparing for the CAQ exam. *Note: Programming is currently under review for qualification as a Self Assessment Module (SAM) through the American Board of Radiology (ABR).
  5. When you've been to too many paper sessions or lectures to see straight, browse the poster and computer-based education exhibits. The poster exhibit area is a great place to wander, see what’s going on in other places and meet other attendees!
  6. There are several hands-on workshops held on Monday through Wednesday on topics such as Introduction to PowerPoint, Advanced PowerPoint, Photoshop and creating teaching files and web sites. These sessions require pre-registration, which is on a first-come, first-served basis. Fellows can register for any of these courses at a cost of only $10 (that’s an 80% price reduction!)
  7. Join the leaders of our society for a Fellows' Luncheon on Tuesday. This is an excellent opportunity to schmooze with leaders in our field including the men and women of the ASNR Executive Committee! It is also a great opportunity to meet your fellow colleagues from other institutions to share ideas and discuss interesting topics.
*Don’t forget to visit the ASNR Fellows' Portal (www.asnr.org/fellows/) to find links to subspecialty websites (pediatric neuro, spine, head and neck, functional neuroradiology, and interventional neuoradiology) and FREE access to computer education exhibits from past ASNR meetings on the Neurographics site (www.neurographics.org/).
