Monday, May 23 | 1:00pm - 2:30pm
"Welcome and Introduction to Business
Issues in Radiology"
Gregory L. Katzman, MD
Chief, Department of Radiology
VA Salt Lake City Health Care System
A brief introduction to the ASNR Business Center concept
will describe the topics to be covered and the overarching
goals we hope to achieve. Following this, Dr. Katzman will
present basic financial accounting principles which are
often utilized by internal management for business
planning as well as by external investors for evaluation of
financial performance.
"Net Present Value and Finance for Practicing
Radiologists"
Jonathan Breslau, MD
Radiological Associates of Sacramento
Today's radiology practices need the financial sophistication
to make smart investment decisions. Familiarity with
fundamental concepts of financial analysis, especially
net present value, allows radiologists to create and value
project opportunities, estimate revenue streams based on
changing assumptions, and generally spend their money
wisely. Dr. Breslau will discuss the capital budgeting
process for new ventures and highlight net present value
as the central quantitative assessment of a series of cash
outflows and cash inflow.
"Managerial Accounting Applications in
Radiology"
Frank J. Lexa, MD, MBA
Professor, Wharton Graduate School of Business
Managerial accounting is one of the most powerful tools
used to optimize business decisions. In the field of
diagnostic imaging, these techniques can be adapted to
help radiologists make better choices by understanding
what it really costs to provide a service. An MR imaging
case study will be used to introduce terms such as fixed,
variable, marginal, direct and indirect costs. The concept of
service activity costing will be used to differentiate used
and unused service costs in an imaging center. This
application will then be used to show how knowing this
information can improve your decisions through a better
understanding of what you are really getting for your money.
Tuesday, May 24 | 1:00pm - 230pm
"Financial Perspectives and Concepts Useful
in Radiology"
Dieter Enzmann, MD, MBA
Chairman, University of California, Los Angeles
Radiology Department
This session will concentrate on concepts in finance that
are useful to radiologists in managing operations, in
making practice and capital equipment decisions, and
assessing strategy. The limits of financial analysis are
also considered.
"Private Practice vs. Academic Management"
Steve Stevens, MD
Chairman, University of Utah
Radiology Department
The challenges of managing an academic practice are
quite different from those of a private practice; but
perhaps in ways different than one might expect. The
personal experiences of almost eighteen years running a
hospital based practice in the private world are
compared and contrasted with those of eight years of
leadership as vice-chairman and subsequently as a
chairman in academic life.
"Offshore Teleradiology: Bane or Boon?"
William Bradley, MD, PhD, FACR
Chairman, University of California San Diego
Radiology Department
This talk will discuss the benefits of using PACS and the
internet to cover wet readings originating from the US with
American-trained and boarded radiologists from countries
where it is daytime when it is night time in the US.
Offshore nighttime coverage will be compared
economically to having local radiologists stay up at night.
This service will also be compared to "outsourcing"
radiology studies to radiologists without American Board
certification in other countries, e.g., India.
